By: jemila henry on January 3, 2008

Two blonde guys were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up. A woman walked by and asked them what they were doing. “We’re supposed to measure the height of this flagpole,” said blonde guy number one, “but we don’t have a ladder.” The woman took a wrench from her purse and loosened some bolts. The guys helped her lay down the flagpole. Then the woman got a tape measure from her pocket, took a measurement and said, “Eighteen feet, six inches,” and walked away. Blonde guy number two shook his head and laughed. “Isn’t that just like a girl? We ask for the height and she gives us the length!”

i read it but i dont understand?
By: jemila henry on January 3, 2008

lol Jemila!!! Think about it
Re revision: the only way to revise maths is to do it! Practise doing questions – use the revision exercises in the book or do questions you have done before which have been marked so that you have solutions to check against afterwards.
Reading doesn’t work with maths.

Remember what we looked at today on the graphs on the laptops. The number on its own in the equation ie not attached to the x, tells you where the line crosses the y axis.
For Q8 look at your notes: the bigger the number, the steeper the line.
Have another look at it – it’s alot easier than you think! Good luck

Read the sign with the number to find the y intercept.
By: Mrs Tibble on January 31, 2008
at 8:50 pm
so if y=x+3=3?
By: Azaly Bunally on January 31, 2008
at 8:53 pm
or would it be 6
By: Azaly Bunally on January 31, 2008
at 8:57 pm
???????????????
By: Azaly Bunally on January 31, 2008
at 8:57 pm
If the number tells you the intercept, why would it be 6? I can’t see a 6 in the equation!
By: Mrs Tibble on January 31, 2008
at 9:01 pm
so will it be 3?
By: Azaly Bunally on January 31, 2008
at 9:06 pm
Are there any other numbers in the equation?
The number tells you the intercept, so if the number is +3 then the line crosses the axis at +3.
By: Mrs Tibble on January 31, 2008
at 9:08 pm
or a positive 3
By: Azaly Bunally on January 31, 2008

I am really stuck on the maths homework! I don’t understand moving the decimal place! Particularly q3 on ex 7q
By: Ella Castle on February 19, 2008
at 6:58 pm
Hi Ella,
What you say you are stuck on doesn’t relate to question 3, does it??
Q3 says change the fraction 7/8 into a decimal. This is what we were doing in the lesson today.
7/8 means 7 divided by 8 so do a division sum: 8 into 7.000
If that doesn’t help, post again trying to be a bit more specific about the place where you get stuck.

If you divide by 100, the numbers will all move 2 columns to the right (because the number is getting smaller) – see page 122 and the questions you did from 7C.
Q2b – do the division sum – just like we did today.
Hope that helps

Hi Aggie,
Q21 – how many lots of 4 inches do you need to make 2 feet?
Q22 – turn the mile into yards, then subtract
Q23 – Change the mile into feet.

But in the text book on the other page it only says 12 inches, what do i do?

Change the km into cm then you’ll be able to add them.

ok but does that mean that it would be 3cm

or i think it will be 0.3
By: Azaly Bunally on March 6, 2008

Just reread the question and realised they want the answer in metres. Convert both measurements into metres and then add them.
Think Azaly! Are 3km and 3cm the same thing????

Soz about the stupid q but you know on the mock paper for the Y7’s you gave us today well I really don’t get Q 12 about: A pattern is to be drawn.
It will have rotational symmetry of order 4.
The pattern has been started.
By shading six more squares, complete the pattern

And why do I have to be the scary yellow blob it weird teeth?
By: Aggie Dell on May 20, 2008
at 6:57 pm
Hi Aggie,
The pictures are nothing to do with us: they are randomly generated by WordPress – sorry!
What is rotational symmetry? Look in your books if you have forgotten.
What does order 4 mean?
You then have to finish colouring in the squares so that it has order 4 rotational symmetry.
By: Mrs Tibble on May 20, 2008
at 7:08 pm
So is rotational symmetry when you turn a thng around? I’m confused I don’t seem to have a propper defenition in my book. I don’t seem to have order 4 either?????
By: Aggie Dell on May 20, 2008
at 7:24 pm
The order tells you how many times the thing looks the same when you rotate it through one full circle.

By: Azaly on May 25, 2008

Yes.
But the numbers stay smaller/simpler if you cancel common factors on top and bottom first.

Hi Mrs Tibble.
I am really confused when it comes to multiplying fractions. I’ve been on the mock exam paper and I was stuck on those questions and I don’t want to be stuck on them in the actual exam because you get a few marks for them. Can you please help me??
Aimee-Louise
p.s.
What homework did we get for after half term because I think I missed that lesson because it’s not written in my journal!!
Thanks!

at 1:21 pm
Hi Aimee,
Homework was revise for your exams!!
Multiplying fractions is easier than adding or subtracting because you don’t need a common denominator.
Multiply the top numbers together to get the new top, and multiply the bottom numbers to get the new bottom. It will then need cancelling down to its lowest terms. You can do the cancelling first to keep the numbers small.
It’s hard to do an example on here because the fractions won’t type properly but if you rewrite this example as fractions with horizontal lines (so you have clear tops and bottoms) it will make more sense.
Example:
3/4 x 8/11
=(3×8)/(4×11)
=24/44
=6/11 (dividing top and bottom by 4)
This is doing it without cancelling first and you can see we have some big numbers.
Instead you can divide the 8 and the 4(one number on top and one number on bottom) by 4 before you multipy. Then it becomes
(3×2)/(1×11)
=6/11
which is already in its lowest terms because you got rid of the common factors first.
Have a good week.

Hi,
Miss tibbles i don’t know how to get into mr Atkins maths blog so i going to ask you to explain some h/w for me.
We have been set h/w on page 313 exercise, question 5 and 6.
I know how to work out Q5 and 6 in formula form but we have to do it in graph form too, but i don’t know how.
Q5. 9c + 2d = 54
c + 2d = 6
My answer:
9c + 2d = 54
c + 2d = 6
8c + 0 = 48
8c = 48
c = 6
c + 2d = 6
6 +2d = 6
d = 0
In formula form i work it to be: c-6, d-0
I don’t know how to do it in graph form
Please may you help me!
